Police have uncovered a motor vehicle theft case at a boarding house in the Cipinang Besar Utara area of Jatinegara, East Jakarta. A video of the motorcycle theft circulated briefly on social media.

“This disclosure represents our commitment to ensuring public safety. We will not give criminals, especially motorcycle thieves who have caused significant alarm among residents, any space to operate,” said AKBP Bayu Kurniawan, head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the East Jakarta Metro Police, in a statement on Friday, 22 May 2026.

The theft occurred on the night of Wednesday, 13 May 2026, around 21:00 local time, at Kost 88, Jalan Bekasi Timur V, RT 009 RW 009, Cipinang Besar Utara, Jatinegara, East Jakarta. The perpetrators absconded with two motorcycles belonging to the victim parked at the boarding house.

The case was handled based on two police reports received by the East Jakarta Metro Police and Jatinegara Police Sector. Four suspects were arrested.

“Each member of the public reporting to us will be followed up quickly and professionally,” he said.

During the operation, the gang arrived on motorcycles. They also divided responsibilities in an organised manner, from the thief executing the theft, to a lookout, to the person who drove away the stolen vehicles from the scene.

Drawing on forensic results from the crime scene, witness statements, CCTV footage, and investigative analysis, a joint team from the East Jakarta Metro Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit identified and arrested the suspects.

4 Suspects Nabbed, 2 of Them Recidivists

The East Jakarta Metro Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit arrested two suspects with initials MBH who were responsible for transporting the stolen vehicles and MS who was supervising the scene during the raid on Monday 18 May at around 15:00 local time. They were arrested in Tarumajaya, Bekasi Regency, West Java.

Police then developed the case and arrested two more suspects with initials NMF and DKF on Tuesday 19 May at around 13:00 in Jatisampurna, Bekasi City, West Java.

Police say NMF is a recidivist in motor vehicle theft, while DKF is a recidivist in snatching money and mobile phones.

Stolen motorcycles sold to Karawang

To the police, the suspects admitted selling the two stolen motorcycles to the Rengasdengklok area in Karawang for six million rupiah. The proceeds were shared equally among all the suspects.

The police also secured several items of evidence including two motorcycles used in the operation, a set of T-bar keys and key bits, and the clothing worn by the suspects during the theft.

The suspects are charged under Article 477 of the Indonesian Penal Code for aggravated theft, carrying a maximum sentence of seven years in prison.

The police also urged the public to increase vigilance when parking vehicles, use additional security locks, and choose safe and well-supervised parking locations. The public is asked to report suspicious activity or crime via the 110 police emergency service, which operates 24 hours a day.

With this case solved, police hope the public will feel safer and actively participate in maintaining public order and safety (kamtibmas) in their respective communities.
