Bekasi — A number of residents are standing guard at an unguarded railway crossing near Cibitung Station, specifically in Telaga Asih Village, West Cikarang Subdistrict, Bekasi Regency, on Thursday (7/5/2026). In addition to ensuring the safety of residents wishing to cross, they also offer a motorcycle lifting service for riders wanting to pass over the tracks. Usually, they wait in a semi-permanent hut along the railway embankment while awaiting riders who use the crossing service. However, approximately 900 metres to 1 kilometre from the spot, there is an official crossing that riders can use. Nevertheless, some residents still cross via this unofficial route by paying around Rp 5,000 for each crossing. Kompas.com observations at the location showed that for each crossing, four or five people help lift the motorcycle. They use bamboo as a supporting tool. They appear accustomed to the activity and even seem quick to time the crossings between passing trains. At the site, several iron signs are lined up as barriers to the railway area. However, some residents still choose to cross there to shorten their travel time. In response, the Public Relations Manager of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Daop 1 Jakarta, Franoto Wibowo, emphasised that activities on the railway tracks without permission are strictly prohibited because they are hazardous. According to him, the prohibition refers to Law No. 23 of 2007 on Railways. Franoto also urged the public, especially two-wheeled vehicle riders, to use official crossings that are properly guarded for collective safety. “This is for everyone’s safety. So we hope no one takes shortcuts by crossing the railway tracks,” he said. KAI will coordinate with local authorities to follow up on the illegal crossing activities. “KAI will coordinate with local authorities to carry out activities to close access for people crossing at that location,” he stated.
