Motives revealed in the murder of South Korean national in Bekasi

The Bekasi Metropolitan Police have revealed the motives behind the premeditated murder of South Korean national Byong Chan Sang (66), a furniture entrepreneur residing in Kampung Buaran, Lambangsari Village, South Tambun, Bekasi Regency.

Bekasi Metropolitan Police Chief, Commissioner Sumarni, stated that investigators have named two suspects in the murder that occurred on Tuesday (26/5): SJ, the victim’s former wife, and HW, who acted as the executor.

“The results of the investigation show that SJ’s motives were resentment, vengeance, emotional distress, alleged violence committed by the victim during their marriage, and the desire to seize the victim’s assets,” Sumarni stated during a press conference at the Bekasi Metro Police Headquarters on Tuesday.

She explained that SJ claimed the victim had failed to provide child support for their children following their divorce. Furthermore, there were unresolved issues regarding the division of marital assets.

According to the investigation, SJ planned the murder of her former husband by involving HW, a man she met while exercising at a fitness centre. SJ promised a reward of Rp139 million to carry out the killing.

Police revealed that the murder was not a spontaneous act. The two suspects met several times to organise the assassination, discussing the execution methods and the payment of the executor’s fee.

Meanwhile, HW admitted to accepting the offer due to economic reasons. HW stated that his family’s financial situation was dire, leading him to be enticed by the promised payment.

“HW’s motive was purely economic. He was in need of money and ultimately accepted the offer to commit the murder,” said Sumarni.
