Motive Behind Shooting of Moroccan National in Bali Revealed, Suspect Was Drunk
Badung Police have uncovered the motive behind a shooting that injured a Moroccan national and a security officer at a nightlife venue in the Canggu area of Bali. The perpetrator, identified by the initials HSH (49), fired the shot in a fit of rage whilst under the influence of alcohol.
Badung Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Joseph Edward Purba explained that the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday (17 July) at around 02.50 Wita on Jalan Pantai Berawa, North Kuta. The suspect, a resident of South Jakarta, arrived at the venue in a drunken state and became involved in an altercation with other patrons.
“The suspect’s motive was anger whilst under the influence of alcohol,” Joseph said at a press conference at Badung Police Headquarters on Monday (20 July).
The incident began when the suspect quarrelled with a witness near the DJ booth. A security officer with the initials IMYM, together with the Moroccan victim, EA (25), attempted to break up the fight. However, during the intervention, IMYM was pushed and fell in front of the suspect, followed by a gunshot fired from HSH’s hand.
The single bullet struck IMYM’s left thigh and passed through, hitting EA’s knee. Both victims were immediately evacuated to the nearest clinic before being referred to Lira Medika Hospital in Badung for further medical treatment.
During the arrest, police seized a number of significant pieces of evidence, including a Glock pistol bearing serial number BATV-955, twelve rounds of 7.65 mm calibre ammunition, and four magazines of varying capacities. CCTV footage from the scene was also secured as key evidence.
For the brutal attack, HSH has been charged under Article 306 of the Criminal Code concerning unlawful firearms possession, carrying a maximum sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment. He has additionally been charged under Article 466 (paragraph 2) of the Criminal Code on aggravated assault, which carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment.
Joseph emphasised that this firm action reflects the Bali Regional Police’s commitment to safeguarding security in the tourism zone. The authorities will not tolerate any form of criminal act that could disrupt the comfort and image of Bali’s tourism sector.
Police arrested Hamad SH, the perpetrator of the shooting at The Shady Pig Canggu, as he attempted to flee to Kuala Lumpur, carrying a Glock 17 pistol.
