JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Government through the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) of the Ministry of Transportation will again hold the Mudik Motor Gratis (Motis) programme during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr homecoming period, targeting to transport 11,900 motorcycles and 28,190 passengers. The programme will be implemented over a 14-day period of the homecoming travel. Through the programme, the public can send motorcycles by train, while the owners accompany the journey by passenger trains. Consequently, mudik travellers do not need to undertake long road journeys on motorcycles. ‘This year the programme is planned to transport around 11,900 vehicles with 28,190 passengers over 14 days of Motis travel,’ said Amin Hudaya, Secretary General of the Directorate General of Railways, in Jakarta, on Thursday (5 March 2026). Although the figure is still relatively small compared with the potential number of motorcycle mudik participants reaching tens of millions, the government is committed to continuing to develop the programme so that its benefits can be felt more widely by the public. ‘This target is indeed not very large compared with the forecast of around 24 million motor users, but we will continue to strive to enhance the Motis service so that in the future more people can benefit from the programme,’ he said. He also urged the public to utilise the Motis programme as a safer, more comfortable, and secure travel option. ‘Through this opportunity we invite the public to utilise the Motis programme so that the mudik journey can take place safely, comfortably, and securely,’ he said. ‘The very large quantity is seen as potentially increasing road safety risks,’ he added. ‘Therefore, to safeguard the safety and comfort of the public undertaking the mudik journey, the government, through the Directorate General of Railways, is endeavouring to provide an alternative via the free motorcycle transport by train Motis programme,’ he emphasised.
