Mother Jumps from Third Floor to Save Child from Fire
A fire broke out at a Padang restaurant in Rawamangun, Pulogadung, East Jakarta. During the incident, a woman made a daring jump from the building’s third floor to save her child, who was about four years old.
“The object on fire was a Padang restaurant, a low-rise building,” the Jakarta Fire and Rescue Command Centre said on Friday (9 October 2026).
Firefighters received the report at 7.35am on Friday and arrived at the scene at around 7.41am, where they immediately began extinguishing the blaze.
Footage circulating online showed flames on the building’s top floor. Amid the fire, a hijab-wearing woman jumped from the second floor to an adjacent building, carrying a young child to safety.
The woman, identified as Siti Ngatiyah, then climbed down via the roof of a bakso shop, with several residents helping her.
“A witness saw a mother save a boy of about four by throwing him from the third floor to the neighbouring building,” said East Jakarta Metro Police public relations chief AKP Made Budi on Friday (9 October 2026).
Witnesses describe mother’s leap
Roni, 30, an employee at the restaurant, said the rescued boy was Siti’s son. The child was thrown from the third floor onto the roof of the neighbouring building when the restaurant caught fire that morning.
“They were already surrounded by flames. The little boy was thrown down first, and then his mother followed. He was thrown from the third floor across to the other side,” Roni said at the scene on Jalan Pegambiran, Rawamangun, Pulogadung, on Friday (9 October 2026).
Another employee, 22-year-old Haikal, said he saw Siti jump from the third floor alongside several staff members who were escaping. He said she had been in the kitchen when the fire broke out and panic set in.
“She was helping out at the back in the kitchen. When it happened, she panicked and went to get her child from the room. When she came back, she saw the fire on the stairs and could no longer get out, so she jumped over there,” Haikal said.
Haikal said the flames had filled the third floor, making the stairs difficult to use. Jumping from the building was the only available way to escape.
Siti and her child survived the fire. She is believed to have suffered injuries, while the child escaped unhurt.
Gas leak suspected; four people injured
The fire at the Padang restaurant in Rawamangun, Pulogadung, is suspected to have been caused by a leaking cooking-gas cylinder.
“The suspected cause [of the fire] was a gas leak,” said Abdul Wahid, operations chief at the East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-agency, on Friday (9 October).
The fire broke out at 7.35am at the restaurant at 45B Jalan Pegambiran, RT 013/RW 08, Rawamangun, Pulogadung district.
Staff tried unsuccessfully to put out the fire using portable fire extinguishers. Four restaurant workers were injured.
“Workers were cooking and wanted to change the gas cylinder when a fire suddenly started in the third-floor kitchen. They tried to put out the growing flames with fire extinguishers, but the fire had already spread, and the workers suffered burns and were taken to hospital,” he said.
He identified the four injured workers as Tia, Agung, Yusuf and Dede. All four received medical treatment.
