Mother embraces homecoming of mail-order bride victim from China

Kusnia, a 21-year-old woman suspected of being a victim of human trafficking under the guise of a mail-order bride in China, has finally returned to her hometown in Jambak Village, Cikedung District, Indramayu Regency. Her homecoming ends nearly five months of suffering in China. She had travelled to China in December 2025. Upon her return, Kusnia was greeted by a tight embrace from her mother, Dartem, 53. Amid the hug, tears of relief flowed between mother and daughter, who were grateful to be reunited. ‘Alhamdulillah, Kusnia has finally returned,’ Dartem said on Saturday, 30 May 2026. During her time in China, Kusnia allegedly suffered physical and sexual violence from her husband, as well as intimidation from his family and the recruitment agency. Kusnia’s distressing story emerged after a plea for help video went viral on social media. In the clip, she identified herself as a victim of a mail-order bride scheme in China and appealed for help from West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi (KDM). Prior to becoming a victim, Kusnia was offered a job at a restaurant in China with a high salary by a friend. She accepted the proposal hoping to support her family’s finances, especially as finding decent work in her hometown was difficult. Following her friend’s advice, Kusnia visited a Tangerang-based agency. However, after a few days there, she was offered to marry a Chinese man for a large dowry and monthly payments to her mother. If she refused, she would have to pay the agency. She eventually accepted the offer. The agency swiftly processed her travel documents, including passport and visa. She was then flown to China in December 2025 and married a Chinese man. However, Kusnia’s dream of a better life crumbled as she repeatedly faced sexual and physical abuse from her husband.
