Most Temanggung farmers poisoned
SEMARANG, Central Java: More than 75 percent of farmers in the
Temanggung regency suffer from pesticide and insecticide
poisoning, the public relations office of the provincial
government says.
Based on surveys carried out by the Temanggung health office,
it was discovered that the poisoning resulted from overuse of
chemicals and unsafe spraying methods.
According to the leader of the survey team, Said Maksudi,
symptoms include nausea and weakness in the body, which in turn
may cause the body to become susceptible to various types of
disorders.
The survey discovered that farmers failed to use proper masks
and gloves, due to ignorance.
The local health office plans to give supervision to the
farmers and to distributors of the chemicals. It will also
purchase the appropriate gear required for protection, to avoid
more farmers failing victim.(har)
