Most police do not have housing

JAKARTA (JP): About 62 percent of the city's 17,000 police officers have no house of their own, city police chief Maj. Gen. Dibyo Widodo says.

"We all know that only 38 percent of the total city police personnel have homes of their own," he said during the inauguration of a small police dormitory, which was renovated after catching fire recently, in Pesing, West Jakarta.

Dibyo promised to give special attention to the problem and would try to provide houses for officers through cooperation with the police cooperative.

The rebuilding of the dormitory was partly financed by local businessmen.

Although the number of police officers, who already own houses, is still small, some do live in big houses and own luxury cars. (bsr)
