Most Bengkulu residents poor

BENGKULU, Bengkulu: Governor Adjis Ahmad said on Thursday that
63.1 percent of the province's 1.3 million residents live below
the poverty line.

"They need our help...and you know this is no easy job," he
said when opening a meeting on the state-sponsored family
planning program.

The officials tried to evaluate the progress in the
implementation of the 1996/97 family planning drive and to
prepare a working program on eradication of poverty in the area.

He called on wealthy people to help the poor by creating more
jobs, Antara reported. (pan)
