Mosque hit by flash flood, Agam residents perform Eid al-Fitr prayer in field
On one side of the field, heavy machinery was visible at the location, positioned alongside the area where residents performed their Eid al-Fitr prayers. The field used for the occasion had previously been vacant land, subsequently filled with stones and remnants from the disaster. A local resident stated that the levelling work had only been carried out about a week prior to make the site suitable for the Eid prayers. From 07:00 WIB, residents began arriving on foot. Among them, some climbed up to the field, while others descended paths. Even some had to cross piles of stones and materials left from the flash flood. The congregation was diverse, including toddlers, teenagers, adults, and the elderly. Despite the limitations, the prayer was conducted under a single tarpaulin stretched at the front, shielding the imam and the men’s rows from the scorching sun. Two units of loudspeakers owned by local residents were used as supporting equipment for the worship, while collection boxes for donations and alms were still available on the sides of the men’s and women’s rows. Residents contributed to these boxes despite their emergency living conditions. Although facilities were limited, the residents performed the prayer in an orderly and devout manner. The rows of the congregation were neatly arranged on simple mats made of tarpaulins spread across the field, while the echoes of takbir resounded in the open area, creating an atmosphere of emotion and steadfastness as the community celebrated Eid al-Fitr. According to data from the West Sumatra One Data Disaster Dashboard, 272 buildings in the subdistrict were damaged by the disaster, ranging from minor to moderate and severe levels. The total losses are estimated at Rp98.7 billion.
