Mosque donates to the needy

JAKARTA: The Cut Nyak Dien Mosque has provided scholarships to 1,000 children and capital for 50 small businesses.

H.M. Syureich, the chairman of the mosque, which is located in Menteng, Central Jakarta, said on Tuesday that 500 scholarships were presented last Sunday during a gathering of the breaking of the fast in the mosque.

The gathering was also attended by H. Mubarok, secretary- general of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Try Sutrisno, a member of the mosque's advisory council, Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso and a number of other prominent figures.

Syureich was quoted by Antara as saying that the mosque had also provided micro-credit without collateral to 260 small businesses across the city.

He said the small businesses were initially given Rp 50,000 each and they could get more later if their businesses performed well.--JP
