KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Kuala Lumpur modeling agencies are barring Moslem models from fashion shows because of new religious rules on indecent dressing, reports said yesterday.
Andrew Tan of Andrew's Models said he would limit Moslem models to traditional costumes and not allow them to take part in fashion shows.
"We have to respect the department's decision. And I have to safeguard my models or else they will be arrested and embarrassed," Tan was quoted as saying by The Star newspaper.
Blitz Production said it would not even use Moslem models for traditional costumes as some clothing can be regarded as "sexy" and "we do not want to get into trouble."
The religious department in central Selangor state warned Wednesday that it would take action against Moslems who dress indecently in public places.
The ruling came a day after three Moslem women were fined by an Islamic court for taking part in a beauty pageant.
Under the new law, action would be taken against women who wear body-hugging dresses, bikinis, leotards, low-cut blouses which show cleavage and high-slit skirts which expose a large part of the leg.
Moslem men would be prosecuted if they appear in public showing off the lower part of the body.
Those convicted face a fine of 1,000 ringgit (US$400), or six months jail, or both.
The move was supported by Moslem women groups, who had also called for a ban on beauty contests, which they said damaged the image and dignity of women.
Moslems make-up more than half of Malaysia's 21 million population.
