Moslem preacher survives shooting

JAKARTA (JP): A group of unidentified men driving in a jeep shot at Kyai Nur Muhammad Hasan's car, damaging the car's windshield and rearview mirror.

The outspoken Moslem preacher was unhurt in the incident which took place on the Tangerang-Serang toll road in West Java at 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, his assistant Sarbini said last night.

Nur was busy giving a lecture in Central Jakarta last night and was therefore not available for comment.

"It is still a mystery," Sarbini told The Jakarta Post.

Sarbini quoted Nur as saying that he and his driver were aware that a Toyota Hardtop jeep had been following them for a few minutes before the shooting.

One passenger fired two shots as the jeep overtook Nur's car, Sarbini said.

Nur, who is the proprietor of a traditional Islamic boarding school in Jakarta, was on his way to Serang to give a lecture, he said.

Last year Nur led a delegation of Moslem ulemas to the House of Representatives to protest the government-sponsored national lottery. (bsr/anr)
