Morowali Customs Seizes 310,470 Illegal Cigarettes in Nusa Maleo Operation

The Morowali Customs and Excise Office has seized 310,470 illegal cigarettes during the Nusa Maleo enforcement operation conducted from 5 to 30 June 2026. The value of the seized goods is estimated at Rp 489.48 million, with potential state revenue losses prevented amounting to Rp 325.42 million. Nusa Maleo is an integrated operation carried out simultaneously by all customs offices within the Regional Office of Customs and Excise for Northern Sulawesi. The initiative focused on intensive surveillance, patrols, inspections, and enforcement against the circulation of illegal cigarettes, which threatens state revenue and undermines a healthy business climate. During the operation, Morowali Customs carried out 35 enforcement actions against the distribution of illegal cigarettes in its jurisdiction. These achievements are part of ongoing efforts to secure state revenue from the excise sector while creating fair competition for compliant business operators. In addition to enforcement, Morowali Customs intensified public outreach and education as a preventive measure. The public was informed about the characteristics of illegal cigarettes and the negative impact they have on state revenue and the sustainability of law-abiding businesses. Head of Morowali Customs, Muhariadi Angkat, stressed the importance of public involvement in eradicating illegal cigarettes. He urged the community not to purchase, sell, or distribute illegal cigarettes. ‘Active public participation is crucial in supporting excise supervision and maintaining a healthy business climate,’ he said in a written statement on Thursday (2/7/2026). He added that synergy between the government, law enforcement agencies, business operators, and the community is key to improving compliance in the excise sector. Moving forward, Morowali Customs will continue to strengthen supervision and enhance collaboration with all stakeholders to suppress the circulation of illegal cigarettes. This measure is expected to protect state revenue, increase public compliance with excise regulations, and support the success of national development.
