Moroccan Ambassador Expresses Condolences over KMP Mutiara Sentosa II Fire Tragedy
The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to Indonesia, Redouane Houssaini, has conveyed his condolences over the tragic fire aboard the Motor Vessel (KMP) Mutiara Sentosa II in the waters north of Sumenep Regency, East Java, on Sunday (2/8).
“I would also like to express my deep sorrow over the tragic accident that occurred in Madura,” said Redouane Houssaini during a meeting with East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa in Surabaya on Monday.
On that occasion, he also expressed his appreciation to Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa for her leadership in handling the disaster.
“I would also like to convey my deep appreciation for the Governor’s leadership — and she is also a former Minister of Social Affairs,” he said.
Meanwhile, East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa expressed her appreciation for the Moroccan Ambassador’s visit and thanked the Moroccan Government for its attention and condolences following the sinking of the KMP Mutiara Sentosa II.
She said the evacuation process is still ongoing. To date, five victims have been found dead, one of whom was a resident of Tulungagung.
“On behalf of the East Java Provincial Government, I express our deep concern and sorrow over this disaster. Our prayers go out to all the passengers, crew, and families awaiting news of their loved ones. May the entire evacuation process proceed smoothly and safely,” said Khofifah.
KMP Mutiara Sentosa II is a Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) ferry owned by PT Atosim Lampung Pelayaran (ALP), serving the regular Surabaya–Makassar route.
The fire was reported to have broken out at around 07:00 Western Indonesian Time (WIB) whilst the vessel was sailing in the waters north of Sumenep.
Khofifah instructed the East Java Provincial Transportation Office to coordinate intensively with the Harbourmaster and Port Authority Office (KSOP), the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL), the Water and Air Police (Polairud), and the ship’s operator to ensure the evacuation and victim handling process runs optimally.
The East Java Provincial Government has also prepared healthcare services, humanitarian assistance, and support for the victims and their families.
“The safety of lives is the top priority,” said Khofifah.
