Moroccan Ambassador Expresses Condolences for KMP Mutiara Sentosa II Tragedy

Surabaya (ANTARA) - Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to Indonesia Redouane Houssaini has expressed his condolences over the tragic fire on the passenger motor vessel KMP Mutiara Sentosa II in the northern waters of Sumenep Regency, East Java, on Sunday (2/8).

“I also wish to express my deepest condolences for the tragic accident that occurred in Madura,” said Redouane Houssaini during a meeting with East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa in Surabaya on Monday.

On that occasion, he also conveyed his appreciation to East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa for her leadership in handling the disaster. “I also wish to express my deep appreciation for the leadership of the Governor, who is also a former Minister of Social Affairs,” he stated.

Meanwhile, East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa expressed her appreciation for the Moroccan Ambassador’s visit and thanked the Moroccan Government for its concern and condolences regarding the sinking of the KMP Mutiara Sentosa II. She stated that the evacuation process is still ongoing. To date, five bodies have been recovered, one of whom was a resident of Tulungagung.

“On behalf of the East Java Provincial Government, I express my deep concern and sorrow over this disaster. Our prayers are with all the passengers, crew members, and families who are waiting for news of their loved ones. May the entire evacuation process be carried out smoothly and safely,” said Khofifah.

The KMP Mutiara Sentosa II is a Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessel owned by PT Atosim Lampung Pelayaran (ALP) serving the regular Surabaya-Makassar route. The fire was reported at around 07.00 WIB while the ship was sailing in the northern waters of Sumenep.

Khofifah has instructed the East Java Provincial Transportation Agency to coordinate intensively with the Harbourmaster and Port Authority Office (KSOP), the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL), the Water and Air Police (Polairud), and the ship operator to ensure the evacuation process and handling of victims proceed optimally. The East Java Provincial Government has also prepared support in the form of health services, humanitarian aid, and assistance for the victims and their families. “Safety of life is the top priority,” said Khofifah.
