The Morning Star flag was raised during a demonstration by students of the Jayapura University of Science and Technology (USTJ) in Jayapura, Papua. Police intervened and secured one individual.
“We have taken steps to address the raising of the Morning Star flag that occurred within the USTJ campus environment. The individual who raised the flag has been detained,” said Jayapura Kota Police Chief, Kombes Fredrick_us W. A. Maclarimboen, on Wednesday (30/09/2026).
The protest and the raising of the Morning Star flag took place within the USTJ campus area on Jalan Sosial Padang Bulan, Hedam, Abepura, Jayapura, Papua, on Wednesday (30/09/2026). Police initially employed persuasive measures.
“Security forces had, from the beginning, engaged in communication and negotiation with the parties present at the location, requesting that the flag hoisted on the campus pole be lowered in an orderly manner to avoid security disturbances,” he explained.
However, during the process of lowering the flag, security forces encountered resistance. Officers were pelted with stones by the crowd at the scene.
