Morning by the River Next to Plaza Indonesia: PPSU Officers and Firefighters Deploy Again to Catch Plecostomus Fish
The Central Jakarta City Government (Pemkot) once again carried out the capture of plecostomus fish in the river located south of Plaza Indonesia, Central Jakarta, on Friday morning (17/4/2026). The capture was led by Central Jakarta Mayor Arifin, assisted by the Food Security, Maritime, and Agriculture Agency (PKP), the Central Jakarta Fire Department (Damkar), the Environmental Agency (DLH), the Water Resources Agency (SDA), as well as public infrastructure and facilities officers (PPSU) from the sub-district. The capture began around 07:30 WIB using drag nets, long-handled scoops, and short-handled scoops. Officers also prepared sacks as containers for the catch. Around 08:00 WIB, two plecostomus fish were successfully captured and immediately placed into plastic sacks by PPSU officers. One officer then displayed a plecostomus fish measuring approximately 35 centimetres (cm). Arifin stated that the activity was a follow-up to the instructions from DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung. “This means we must be able to reduce the plecostomus fish population in Jakarta’s waters, because the plecostomus now dominate the existing waters,” he explained. Arifin also conveyed residents’ complaints who often fish in Central Jakarta’s rivers. “The fish that are there are mostly plecostomus, because the eggs of the local fish have been eaten up by them (plecostomus),” Arifin said.
