More traffic violators on toll roads ticketed
JAKARTA (JP): Police ticketed a total of 358 traffic violators
on toll roads in and around the city during a six-day operation
beginning Jan. 14, says National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. IK
Ratta.
"Although the number is quite high, almost 60 cases per day,
no accidents took place," Ratta said on Tuesday.
Of the number, 99 violators were found driving on the shoulder
of highways which is reserved for emergency vehicles, 143 were
speeding, 61 driving at low speed in the fast lane, 36 overtaking
on the left side and 19 zig-zagging, he said.
Truck drivers topped the list of violators.
The joint ticketing operation between the police and personnel
of related institutions against recalcitrant drivers on the toll
roads will be expanded to highways in Tangerang, Serang and
Cikampek, Ratta said.
"We are all really disappointed with these figures because all
traffic and road signs on the toll roads are clear and visible
enough for the drivers but they still violate the rules," he
said.
In comparison, Ratta added, police recorded 17,591 violations
on toll roads throughout the country during a similar operation
held between Jan. 8 and 14.
A total of 82 people died in accidents on the highways during
that period.
The number of casualties with serious injuries reached 121 and
those with light injuries 126, he said. (bsr)
