KOMPAS.com – Social media is often used as a space to share stories, feelings, and life experiences. However, not all sharing activities can be categorised as a healthy form of expression.

In some cases, a person may become trapped in the behaviour of oversharing, or sharing personal information excessively without considering the long-term impact.

Clinical Psychologist Winona Lalita R. explains that oversharing can be identified by changes in a person’s purpose when sharing content on social media. According to her, this shift in purpose is the most noticeable early sign.

“If it shifts to oversharing, it can be seen from the aspect of purpose, which is different. Usually, what is uploaded only satisfies oneself in the moment,” said Winona when contacted by Kompas.com, Monday (23/2/2026).

“For example, my feelings are very intense, instead of regulating my emotions, I choose to express them on social media,” said Winona.

She explains that this kind of post is often done impulsively, following the emotions being felt at that moment, without taking time to think or consider the impact.

“This makes them feel connected or simply spam and express what they are feeling right now,” she said.

“Oversharing can be about sharing everything without a filter, without realising that we have crossed our own privacy, things that should not be known by others,” she explained.

This condition blurs the line between private and public space, because information that should be personal is instead disseminated to the digital public sphere.

Winona also highlights the aspect of sensitivity to social situations as an indicator of oversharing. She says that someone who overshares tends not to consider the context or issues that are developing in society.
