More Than Just Saving: How Urban Workers Manage Money Without Sacrificing Comfort

JAKARTA — Managing finances now requires more than simply setting money aside in a savings account. Amidst a fast-paced urban lifestyle filled with spending distractions, many urban workers are seeking ways to maintain financial control without sacrificing their quality of life.

One increasingly popular method is budgeting expenses immediately upon receiving a salary. This ensures that daily expenses, savings, and entertainment funds are not mixed within a single balance. Upon receiving a salary, an individual maps out funds according to specific needs. “Usually, every payday, I immediately set aside money for savings, then allocate the rest according to my needs. For example, a certain amount for monthly transport, a certain amount for food, and a certain amount for rent,” she told Kompas.com recently.

This habit began during her time studying away from home, though she admits her financial management skills only truly matured during her second year of working. Despite implementing these strategies, Tamara admits she still experiences ‘budget leaks.’ One primary cause stems from small, seemingly trivial, but routine expenses. Among various expenditures, the habit of buying coffee is the most frequent silent budget drain. “Lately, because I work from cafes more often, a single session can cost over Rp 80,000, including transport, food, and coffee,” she explained.

To keep spending within plan, Tamara now separates her budget using ‘pocket’ features from savings accounts and e-wallets. Daily necessities such as food, transport, and monthly groceries are managed through digital pocket features in the Bank Jago application. Meanwhile, subscription payments for music and other applications are handled through separate digital wallets.

According to her, this method is far more practical than her previous approach. “Before digital pocket features existed, after payday, I used to withdraw cash and divide it into several envelopes labelled for transport, food, and so on,” she said. With this system, she finds it easier to control spending without having to impose excessive restrictions on herself.
