More Than Just an App: ChatGPT Reportedly Set to Launch AI Phone
KOMPAS.com - OpenAI’s plans to launch its own smartphone appear to be gaining momentum. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, known for his accurate predictions about Apple products, has shared the latest details about the device, including estimated production schedules and technical specifications.
Kuo predicts that the AI smartphone from the company behind ChatGPT will enter mass production in the first half of 2027, earlier than previous estimates which suggested 2028.
This acceleration is said to be driven by the increasing trend of AI phones in the technology industry, as well as the possibility of OpenAI conducting an IPO in the near future.
If all goes according to plan, Kuo projects that total shipments of the device could reach around 30 million units between 2027 and 2028, a figure he says is comparable to the annual sales of flagship lines such as the Samsung Galaxy S25 in its first year.
The concept being adopted is ‘agentic AI’, which refers to artificial intelligence that can perform various tasks automatically without requiring users to open individual applications. Simply by giving a command, the AI will execute it.
In terms of processing power, Kuo says OpenAI is likely to rely on MediaTek chipsets as the device’s main processor, replacing the Qualcomm option that was previously being considered.
The chip used is expected to be a custom version of the Dimensity 9600, a flagship chip that is expected to launch in the third quarter of this year with the latest TSMC N2P fabrication process.
The device is also said to feature a dual-NPU architecture for optimal AI processing, LPDDR6 RAM, UFS 5.0 storage, and pKVM and inline hashing security technologies.
Not only performance, but camera capabilities are also a key focus. The ISP on the device’s chipset is said to be equipped with a special HDR feature, which allows the camera not only to take pictures, but also to help the AI understand the user’s surroundings in real-time.
