More Than Just a Ghost: Director and Luna Maya Say Suzzanna is a Superhero

The character of Suzzanna has long been associated with the image of a terrifying ghost in Indonesian horror cinema. However, through the latest film titled ‘Suzzanna: Santet Dosa di Atas Dosa,’ director Azhar Kinoi Lubis and lead actress Luna Maya are trying to restore the aura of the legend as a symbol of female strength, even equating her to a superhero figure.

The director revealed that from the beginning of the project, he had a major mission to revive the essence of the Suzzanna character that he admired since childhood.

For him, Suzzanna in this film is not just a ghost figure, but a representation of resistance against the injustices experienced by women.

“Suzzanna is like Wonder Woman. Every time we watch her old films, she is like a female figure in which the main character is given a message. There is sexual harassment, how this woman speaks through each of her titles. There is oppression against women, how she becomes a victim,” said Kinoi at a press junket event in the Gondangdia area, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (February 25).

Kinoi added that the aura he wants to build is not just about pursuing the scary aspect visually, but showing Suzzanna as a representative of the voice of Indonesian women who dare to rise up.

“So it’s not just that Suzzanna is a scary ghost figure. I want to restore that Suzzanna is Suzzanna. This is a representation of all Indonesian women that she wants to speak, she wants to rise,” he emphasized.

In line with the director, Luna Maya, who plays the iconic character, admitted that she was very inspired by the spirit that Suzzanna has.

Luna sees a remarkable transformation from a woman who is often underestimated to a figure who is steadfast.

“I see the Suzzanna character as a real superhero. Someone who fights crime, on a small scale but she is a hero. Maybe not for everyone around her but for herself and her family,” said Luna Maya.

Furthermore, Luna emphasized the importance of the empowerment values carried by this character. In the midst of her views on the condition of women today, she hopes that the strong spirit of Suzzanna can be contagious to women in Indonesia so that they remain outspoken even when they are tried to be silenced.

“She comes with a character that (states) that women must be empowered, women must have a voice. When she is about to be silenced, she remains outspoken. I really like the transformation of a woman who is so underestimated, but she can, she is a cool person. So I want that spirit to be in every woman in Indonesia so that they can have a strong character,” she added.

For Luna, playing Suzzanna in this film provides its own satisfaction because the character proves that beauty does not diminish a woman’s principles and self-worth.

Different from previous films, the film ‘Suzzanna: Santet Dosa di Atas Dosa’ produced by Soraya Intercine Films and also starring actor Reza Rahadian will tell the human side of the legendary figure. The film is scheduled to be released in all cinemas in Indonesia starting March 18, 2026. (Z-1)
