More than 720,000 Palestinian students lose access to basic education

Tunis (ANTARA) - Tunisia’s state-run newspaper, La Presse, on Monday (14/9) quoted Palestinian Education Minister Amjad Barham as saying that more than 720,000 Palestinian students have lost access to basic education amid Israel’s continuing onslaught.

“More than 90 per cent of school buildings and 82 per cent of universities in the Gaza Strip have been destroyed,” Barham said at a conference on Palestinian children held in Tunis and organised by the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO).

The minister highlighted the severe educational crisis facing Palestinian children, particularly in the Gaza Strip.

He also condemned the systematic targeting of educational infrastructure, noting that thousands of Israeli military checkpoints continue to restrict students’ mobility.

ALECSO Director-General Mohamed Ould Amar stressed the need for urgent regional cooperation and announced that the organisation would establish a joint Arab action plan with emergency protection mechanisms.
