More Tangerang workers on strike

JAKARTA (JP): At least 200 workers of PT Roxy Prima in Cikupa, Tangerang, 30 km west of here, went on strike on Wednesday, demanding that the company increase their salary in accordance with the current minimum wage.

The workers of the glass-producing company refused to work, and gathered at the factory's square. They said that they would not work unless the company raised their Rp 3,600 ($1.7) current salary to the present Rp 4,600 official minimum wage.

After a talk with the company's manager Liani, the workers dispersed and promised to work again the next day.

Meanwhile, in the nearby village of Sukadamai, some 300 workers of construction company PT Comblok also staged a protest, demanding the company pay their transportation allowance, overtime pay, and working insurance. They also demanded open communication with the company's management.

The company's manager, Pieter H. Walker, had successfully persuaded the workers not to make any trouble by promising that the management would consider their demands. (03/18)
