KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Indonesian waters remain dangerous for ships, accounting for more than 30 percent of piracy attacks worldwide during the first three months of this year, the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) said on Thursday.
The bureau's Piracy Reporting Center in Kuala Lumpur received 56 reports of attacks of which 19 occurred in Indonesian waters, the IMB said in its quarterly report.
During the same period last year Indonesia also topped the list with 18 attacks out of a total of 66.
Seven attacks were reported in the Strait of Malacca between Malaysia and Indonesia, five off India, four off Bangladesh, four off Nigeria and the rest in a variety of locations worldwide.
No deaths were reported in the first three months even though pirates were armed with guns, knives and other weapons.
