More of Lee's memoirs due soon

SINGAPORE (AFP): The second volume of memoirs by Singapore elder statesman Lee Kuan Yew will be launched next month to coincide with Lee's 77th birthday on Sept. 16, joint publishers Singapore Press Holdings said on Friday.

Titled From Third World to First, The Singapore Story: 1965- 2000, the memoirs continue from where Lee's controversial first volume, The Singapore Story: Memoirs of Lee Kuan Yew, left off.

Malaysians in particular were angered by the first volume and Lee's unflattering portrait of Malaysian leaders, some of whom he held responsible for the racial riots that led to Singapore's break from Kuala Lumpur in 1965.

The second volume of memoirs, jointly published by Singapore Press Holdings and Times Publishing Group, tells of the nation's rapid rise since achieving independence to its present status as a thriving metropolis with the world's fourth highest per capita income.
