More hole-in-ones expected in major golf event

JAKARTA (JP): The 2001 Fedex-RPX corporate golf league is expected to produce more hole-in-ones in the event which starts next Friday.

The league, organized by Golf Links Indonesia, is to be played on six different golf courses around Jakarta on the last Friday of each month for the next six months.

The first match will take place at the Cengkareng Soewarna Golf Club on March 30. The next legs are at the Bogor Raya Golf Club on April 27, the Cikeas Riverside Golf Course on May 25, the Bumi Serpong Damai Golf Course on June 29 and the Rancamaya Golf and Country Club on July 27.

The last match will be staged on Aug. 10 at the Jagorawi Golf and Country Club.

"So far we have had four hole-in-ones in the last two years. Three were made in last year's league and another hole-in-one was achieved two years ago. I hope the golfers can card more hole-in- ones," president of the league's main sponsor PT Repex Perdana International, Harsha E. Joesoef, told a media conference at the Financial Club on Tuesday to launch the league.

Also speaking at the conference were Barbara Janthy Speirs of event organizer Golf Links Indonesia and the initiator Alan Clarke of Singapore-based John Burgess Associates.

"The league is designed as an event where participants can make business contacts and network as well as entertain clients or would-be clients while playing golf," said Barbara.

Clarke emphasized the importance of having limited number of participants.

"There are 26 teams, comprising of four players each, who have already signed up, though we expect a couple more teams to register. But we will limit the number of teams in the league," he said.

"Since the league is designed as a corporate hospitality event instead of a real golf competition, it is inconvenient to have too many participants." (nvn)
