More Foreign Tourists Riding Trains, Here's the Proof

PT KAI recorded an increase in the number of foreign nationals travelling by train through various stations in the Semarang Operational Area 4 during the first semester of 2026, a rise of approximately 9.38 per cent compared to the same period the previous year. Public Relations Manager of PT KAI Daop Semarang, Luqman Arif, stated that the number of foreign nationals departing from or arriving at various stations in the Semarang Operational Area from January to June 2026 was recorded at 51,372 people. This figure increased from 46,968 passengers in the same period last year. “Semarang Tawang remains one of the stations of choice for foreign nationals, with a total of 24,976 passengers,” Luqman said in Semarang on Friday, 17 July 2026. Although the station in the capital of Central Java is still the main destination for foreign nationals using trains, he noted that there are also foreigners boarding or alighting at relatively smaller stations, such as Weleri and Pemalang stations. According to him, train travel also provides a unique tourism experience for international tourists who wish to enjoy the beauty of rural, urban, and even coastal landscapes along the railway line. He added that trains are an efficient and environmentally friendly mode of transport for foreign nationals visiting Indonesia. He said the rail service guarantees comfort, safety, and direct access to various leading tourist destinations in Central Java. He confirmed that PT KAI remains committed to supporting the growth of the tourism sector by improving service quality, maintaining infrastructure, and ensuring travel safety. “We ensure that all facilities and routes in Operational Area 4 are ready so that the journeys of tourists, both domestic and international, are always comfortable and safe,” he said.
