More Foreign Tourists Riding Trains, Here's the Proof

PT KAI has recorded a rise in the number of foreign nationals (WNA) travelling by train through various stations in the Daop 4 Semarang region during the first half of 2026, an increase of around 9.38 per cent compared with the same period the previous year.

Manager of Public Relations for PT KAI Daop Semarang, Luqman Arif, said the number of foreign nationals departing from or arriving at stations across Daop Semarang between January and June 2026 was recorded at 51,372. This figure, he said, represented an increase compared with the same period last year, which reached 46,968 passengers.

“Semarang Tawang remains one of the stations of choice for foreign nationals departing or arriving, with numbers reaching 24,976 passengers,” Luqman said in Semarang on Friday, 17 July 2026.

Although stations in the capital of Central Java remain the main destination for foreign nationals travelling by train, he said there are also foreigners boarding and alighting at relatively smaller stations, such as Weleri and Pemalang.

According to him, travelling by train also offers a distinctive tourism experience for international visitors wishing to enjoy the beauty of rural, urban and even coastal landscapes along the rail routes.

Rail travel, he continued, is an efficient and environmentally friendly mode of transport for foreign nationals visiting Indonesia. He said train services provide guaranteed comfort, security and direct access to various leading tourist destinations in Central Java.

He assured that PT KAI remains committed to supporting the growth of the tourism sector through improvements in service quality, infrastructure maintenance and journey safety.

“We ensure that all facilities and rail lines in the Daop 4 region are in ready condition so that journeys by tourists, both domestic and international, are always comfortable and safe,” he said.
