More figures apply for MK

JAKARTA: The People's Consultative Assembly has registered 67 people who have applied for membership to the Constitutional Commission, but only 33 of the potential members have completed the required documents.

Harun Kamil, deputy chairman of the ad hoc Assembly committee for the commission's establishment, said on Thursday his team would examine the candidates between Sept. 23 and Sept. 30.

Constitutional experts Sri Soemantri and Bintan R. Saragih, economist Sri Edi Swasono and human rights activist Albert Hasibuan are among the applicants.

The 31-member commission will be assigned to review and synchronize all of the amendments to the 1945 Constitution made by the Assembly between 1999 and 2002.

The commission is scheduled to complete its work within seven months, with the results to be reported to the Assembly next year.

Many had expected the commission to be an independent body whose job would be to draft a new constitution, but the Assembly stamped out these expectations. -- JP
