More eye donors for Abdurrahman

SEMARANG (JP): United Development Party (PPP) supporters have joined the list of willing eye donors for President Abdurrahman Wahid, a National Awakening Party (PKB) official said on Friday.

"If he (Abdurrahman) accepts the people's offer, many people, including leaders from PKB, the United Development Party and other organizations, are willing to donate their eyes," the secretary-general of PKB's Central Java chapter, Abdul Kadir Karding, said.

Kadir's statement was confirmed by the chairman of PPP's Central Java chapter, M. Toyfoer.

"I call on all ulema to persuade him (Abdurrahman) to grant the people's wish. Muslim cleric such as Mustofa Bisri, Cholil Bisiri, Zaid Muhzadi or Sabal Mahfud could convince him," Toyfoer said.

No official response was given by the palace as of Friday.

Kadir said he suspected Abdurrahman was reluctant to accept the people's offer. (har/edt)
