More demonstrators face jail terms

JAKARTA (JP): A state prosecutor asked the Central Jakarta District Court yesterday to jail four more supporters of Megawati Soekarnoputri, the ousted leader of the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI), to eight months each.

The four were other supporters of the Megawati camp apart from the 124 tried in court last year for their alleged involvement in the July 27 riot.

The four supporters, M. Nur bin Sukasto, Dominggus Dosantos, Sanggek Suhendra and Daglan Raja Goek Goek were charged with assaulting security officers and attacking a police station near the party headquarters.

They were also accused of ignoring police order to disperse when they were found amidst the mob near the riot scene.

However, according to previous sessions two of the four defendants held a United Development Party and a Golkar membership card respectively.

Of the 124 supporters, 115 were sentenced to four months and three days imprisonment each for their involvement in the July 27 riot.

Another supporter received one month and 10 days in jail while eight others were acquitted of all charges.

The riot started when supporters of Soerjadi, the officially- backed PDI leader, seized the party headquarters on Jl. Diponegoro, Central Jakarta, from Megawati's loyalists. (05)
