More Comfortable School Holidays: KAI's Priority Train Serves 46,900 Passengers in Jan–May 2026
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has reported a significant increase in demand for its premium Kereta Priority service, with passenger numbers soaring 88.1 percent year-on-year in the first five months of 2026. The state-owned railway company served 46,900 passengers from 1,818 journeys between January and May 2026, compared to 24,934 passengers from 967 journeys in the same period last year.
Vice President Corporate Communication KAI Anne Purba stated that the growth indicates customers are increasingly seeking more comfortable, private, and memorable travel experiences, particularly during the school holiday period. “The Priority Train is an option for families who want to enjoy a journey with a calmer cabin atmosphere, spacious seats, and entertainment facilities on board,” Anne said.
Monthly data shows the service carried 9,818 passengers in January, 8,150 in February, and peaked at 12,675 passengers in March. April recorded 7,280 passengers, while May saw 8,977 passengers, a 39.89 percent increase from the 6,417 passengers served in May 2025. The number of journeys also rose by 35.45 percent, from 268 to 363 trips.
The Kereta Priority is a premium carriage that can be attached to regular train services. It currently operates on the Pandalungan route between Gambir and Jember, and the Parahyangan route between Gambir and Bandung. Beyond these scheduled services, the carriage can also be chartered by groups, institutions, or families through KAI Wisata, subject to availability.
Designed for up to 30 passengers, the carriage offers an exclusive travel experience with spacious seating. Each seat is equipped with an audio-video-on-demand touchscreen, a portable table, power socket, reading lamp, and footrest. Additional amenities include overhead luggage compartments, a mini bar, a karaoke system, a large TV screen, and an exclusive toilet.
Anne Purba added that the Priority service provides a relaxed environment where children can rest and parents can enjoy a more peaceful journey. KAI also reminded families travelling with children during the school holidays to arrive at the station early, supervise their children, and follow staff instructions to ensure a safe and orderly travel experience.
