The school holiday season is a period of increased public mobility across various regions, driven by tourism, family visits, and educational activities. To support these needs, the Government, through the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) of the Ministry of Transport, has introduced a 3_0 per cent transport discount programme for commercial economy class train travel.

As the national railway operator, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) is supporting this programme by preparing a capacity of 1,174,624 seats for departures between 20 June and 5 July 2026. This programme provides wider opportunities for the public to travel at more affordable costs during the school holidays.

Beyond supporting public mobility, the increase in travel during the school holiday period is expected to contribute to economic activities in various destination regions. The tourism, culinary, hospitality, and onward transport sectors, as well as MSMEs, stand to benefit from the increased number of visitors.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, stated that the discount programme from the Government via the Ministry of Transport’s DJKA can provide a positive impact on both the public and destination areas. “The discount programme provides wider opportunities for the public to travel during the school holidays. Increased mobility also supports economic activities in various destination regions,” said Anne.

Public enthusiasm for the programme has been evident since sales opened on 6 June 2026. As of Monday, 8 June 2026, at 09:30 WIB, KAI recorded sales of 86,036 tickets, representing 7.32 per cent of the total capacity provided. Consequently, 1,088,588 tickets, or 92.68 per cent of the prepared capacity, remain available, allowing the public flexibility in choosing schedules and destinations.

Preliminary data shows that routes to tourist, educational, and major activity centres remain the primary choices for customers. As of 8 June 2026, the top five favourite routes are:

  1. Pasarsenen–Lempuyangan: 3,256 passengers

  2. Lempuyangan–Pasarsenen: 3,188 passengers

  3. Pasarsenen–Yogyakarta: 1,987 passengers

  4. Yogyakarta–Pasarsenen: 1,410 passengers

  5. Pasarsenen–Malang: 1,331 passengers

The dominance of routes towards Yogyakarta, Solo, Malang, Kutoarjo, Blitar, and Ketapang indicates high interest in areas with significant tourism, cultural, educational, and local economic appeal. This surge in mobility has the potential to positively impact various business sectors during the holiday period.

Regarding discounted services, the five favourite trains are:

  1. KA Majapahit (Malang–Pasarsenen, return): 5,112 passengers

  2. KA Sawunggalih (Kutoarjo–Pasarsenen, return): 4,526 passengers

  3. KA Progo (Lempuyangan–Pasarsenen, return): 4,401 passengers

  4. KA Singasari (Blitar–Pasarsenen, return): 3,821 passengers

  5. KA Blambangan Ekspres (Ketapang–Pasarsenen, return): 3,413 passengers

Anne noted that current sales figures indicate a significant opportunity for the public to utilise the discount programme as most capacity is still available. “Public interest continues to grow, but the available capacity is still very large. We invite customers to plan their journeys early to take advantage of the discounted fares and access a wider range of travel options,” said Anne.

The 30 per cent discount applies to all commercial economy class trains for departures between 20 June and 5 July 2026. Tickets can be purchased through all official KAI sales channels.

The terms and conditions of the discount programme are as follows:

  1. Discounted tickets can be purchased through all official KAI sales channels.

  2. The discount applies to departures between 20 June and 5 July 2026.

  3. The discount is specifically for commercial economy class trains.

  4. The discount does not apply to special fares and cannot be combined with other reductions or discounts.

  5. Discounted tickets can be cancelled or rescheduled in accordance with applicable regulations.

  6. Travel schedules and train lists can be viewed via the Access by KAI application.

  7. The programme is subject to ticket allocation and availability.

Anne added that KAI continues to ensure the readiness of rolling stock, infrastructure, and operational resources to serve public travel needs during the school holidays. “KAI is preparing more than 1.17 million seats to support the Government’s programme. We hope this stimulus can be utilised by the public while providing benefits to the tourism and regional economic sectors during the school holidays,” Anne concluded.
