Moratorium on Regional Autonomy

| Source: TEMPO
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Government has stopped regional autonomy for the rest of this year until 2010 as most regions with regional autonomy have displayed bad performances.

Deputy for Regional Development and Autonomy of National Development Planning Board (Bappenas), Max H. Pohan, said that it was possible for the government to reunite these separated regions.

“The President has mentioned several times about a moratorium, so there will be no regional autonomy this year and next year,” he said.

He acknowledged that evaluation reports on regional performance have been submitted. The appraisal of the reports was based on their public services and economic capability.

He did not mention which regions had displayed bad performances. “I have to check this out first,” said Pohan.

He went on to say that many regions issue non-conducive regulations that cost a lot.
