Moral victory of democracy supporters

Moral victory of democracy supporters

From Koran Tempo

The victory celebrated by some of the people today is not
substantial, as the victory has been reached unfairly. Most
Indonesian people have noticed that there is a group that has
shown its prejudice by making sarcastic and exaggerated remarks,
frequently not based on clear thinking and objectivity.

The same tendency has also been shown by the mass media,
political observers and even legislators. They have shown their
prejudice by predicting the escalation of violence by supporters
of former president Abdurrahman Wahid. But their predictions
proved to be wrong.

The peaceful situation has been created thanks to the wisdom
of the prodemocracy group, not merely due to the alertness of the
police and military. Democracy supporters preferred to avoid
violence, though they had the opportunity to engage in it.

This is the "moral victory" of prodemocracy elements. The
"moral victory" here is not related to an intention to popularize
any specific group.

The Ahimsa (non-violence) Community views that the moral
victory of the NU members, prodemocracy elements and Abdurrahman
Wahid's supporters deserves to be recorded in the history of the
struggle for democracy in Indonesia.
