Monkey Steals Golfer's Mobile Phone in Sentul, Carries It Up a Tree
A viral video circulating on social media shows a grey monkey stealing a golfer’s mobile phone on a golf course in the Sentul area of Bogor, West Java. The monkey carried the phone up a tree.
In the clip, viewed by detikcom on Friday, 22 May 2026, a monkey is seen perched on a high branch cradling the phone. The monkey later relocated to another branch and joined other monkeys.
Several people believed to be golfers are seen trying to coax the animal to return the phone, including by clapping their hands. However, by the end of the video, the monkey remains with the black phone.
Head of the Bogor Regency Fire Department, Yudi Santosa, said there have been no official reports about the incident. He said they would respond and evacuate immediately if a report were filed. ‘There is no report about that. If asked for evacuation assistance, we will be there, anywhere, anytime,’ he said on Friday, 22 May 2026.
Separately, Sector Commander Hendra of the Sentul Fire Sector said his team had traced the location after the video went viral. ‘There was no report to us about it, sir. But earlier a member checked; information suggested the incident occurred on Jalan Golf, but when checked the monkey had already left. So when we saw it on social media, we went to the location but it wasn’t there anymore, perhaps because there was no report at the time of the incident,’ Hendra told detikcom.
Detikcom attempted to contact the social media account holder suspected of posting the video, but as of publication, there was no response.
