Monkey Escaped from Ibarbo Park Spotted Roaming Bejen Residential Area

A monkey from Ibarbo Park has been spotted frequenting Karangtanjung in Bejen village, Caturharho District, Sleman. The Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) is still working to evacuate the animal.

This was stated by Wahyu Tri Kuncara, Head of Section I of the Yogyakarta BKSDA. He said the report was received from local residents.

He could not yet confirm whether the monkey was the same one seen roaming near SMPN 1 Sleman, roughly three kilometres from the location.

“Based on our monitoring, there is one long-tailed macaque that has been roaming the area for around three months. The animal has begun feeding on residents’ plants, and has even grown bold enough to take food from residential areas and people’s homes,” Wahyu said when contacted by detikJogja on Monday (27/7/2026).

Wahyu explained that the monkey is most often seen around the settlement from morning until late afternoon. One of the animal’s regular resting spots is a resident’s duck pen.

“During monitoring, at around 10.19 Western Indonesian Time, the animal was seen inside the duck pen, which is indeed one of its favourite spots to visit,” he said.

According to Wahyu, the location where the monkey has appeared is about 3.7 kilometres from Ibarbo Park. For this reason, officers are also coordinating with various parties to monitor the animal’s whereabouts.

“Yes, that is the indication (that it came from Ibarbo Park). We urge the public not to feed wild animals. This is important so that the animal does not become dependent on humans and maintains its natural behaviour in its habitat,” he said.

As a follow-up measure, BKSDA has installed a trap cage at a spot the monkey frequently visits. This is intended to facilitate the evacuation process should the animal enter the trap. As of today, Wahyu said, the monkey has not yet been secured.

“Officers have installed a trap cage at a strategic location the animal often visits. We will continue monitoring until the evacuation can be carried out safely,” he explained.

“Not yet. We set up the trap cage yesterday, and as of today there has been no update that the animal has entered it,” he concluded.
