Monkey Escaped from Ibarbo Park Spotted Roaming Bejen Residential Area

A monkey from Ibarbo Park has been frequently spotted in Karangtanjung, Bejen Village, Caturharjo District, Sleman. The Yogyakarta Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) is still attempting to evacuate the monkey. This was conveyed by the Head of the KSDA Section for Region I of the Yogyakarta BKSDA, Wahyu Tri Kuncara. He stated that the report was received from residents. He could not yet confirm whether the monkey is the same one that was roaming near SMPN 1 Sleman, approximately three kilometres from the current location. “From monitoring results, one long-tailed macaque has been roaming around the location for about three months. The animal has started foraging for food from residents’ crops and has even dared to take food in residential areas or people’s homes,” Wahyu said. Wahyu explained that the monkey is more often seen around the settlement from morning until late afternoon. One of the locations the animal frequently visits is a duck shed belonging to a resident. “During monitoring, around 10:19 WIB, the animal was seen inside the duck shed, which has become one of its favourite spots to visit,” he clarified. According to Wahyu, the location where the monkey appears is approximately 3.7 kilometres from Ibarbo Park. Consequently, officers are coordinating with various parties to monitor the animal’s movements. “Yes, it is indicated to be from Ibarbo Park. We urge the public not to feed the wild animal. This is important so that the animal does not become dependent on humans and retains its natural behaviour in its habitat,” Wahyu said. As a follow-up, BKSDA has installed a trap cage at a strategic location frequently visited by the monkey. This effort is intended to facilitate the evacuation process. As of today, Wahyu said, the monkey has not yet been secured. “Officers have installed a trap cage in a strategic location often visited by the animal. We will continue monitoring until the evacuation can be carried out safely,” he explained. “Not yet, we installed the trap cage yesterday, and as of today, there has been no update that the animal has entered it,” he concluded.
