Monitoring Irrigation Programme in Grobogan, Ibas Says Infrastructure Must Benefit the People
Grobogan, VIVA – Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono, known as Ibas, has stressed the importance of developing and maintaining irrigation networks to support agricultural productivity and improve farmers’ welfare.
He made the remarks while attending an irrigation programme activity under the Acceleration of Irrigation Water Use Improvement Programme (P3-TGAI) in Berkesi village, Grobogan regency, Central Java, on Wednesday (28 October 2026).
Ibas said irrigation was vital infrastructure for the sustainability of the agricultural sector, particularly in addressing changing weather conditions, drought and the risk of crop failure.
He said an adequate water supply would help farmers maintain land productivity and crop quality, while supporting efforts to achieve national food security and self-sufficiency.
“We want farmers to be able to keep planting, whether rice or other crops. Irrigation infrastructure must therefore be put to proper use to support people’s livelihoods and welfare,” Ibas said.
The Democratic Party deputy chairman-general urged farmers to maintain and make optimal use of irrigation networks and available water pumps. Water should be distributed in rotation, based on agreements between farmer groups, particularly during the dry season, so that needs are met fairly and disputes are avoided.
Ibas also emphasised the need to be prepared for changing weather, including the threat of El Niño, which could bring a prolonged dry season.
At the same time, heavy rainfall and flooding could disrupt farmland and cause crop failures. He said irrigation infrastructure should help farmers cope with these challenges and keep cultivation going.
Ibas said irrigation must be accompanied by good management, discipline and solidarity among farmers. He encouraged farmer groups to co-ordinate water use, look after existing facilities and remain committed to working their land despite natural challenges.
He also urged farmers to continue working hard to improve the quality of their produce. With support for agricultural inputs, adequate irrigation and strong co-operation, productivity in Grobogan is expected to keep rising and contribute to national food security.
