Monitoring group: Internet outages in Iran enter second week
Istanbul (ANTARA) - Internet access across Iran remains heavily restricted on Sunday as nationwide outages enter their second week, according to an internet monitoring group. In a post published on the X social media platform on Sunday (8/3), NetBlocks said the disruption had entered its ninth consecutive day. ‘Update: It’s Sunday morning in Iran where the internet blackout continues, entering its second week, with this incident entering the ninth day at hour 192,’ NetBlocks wrote. The organisation said that although the country’s technical network infrastructure is still functioning, citizens currently have access only to a highly restricted domestic network. More than 1,200 people, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several senior military officials, were reported killed and more than 10,000 injured in attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran since 28 February, according to official Iranian data. Tehran then retaliated by launching drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and Gulf states that host U.S. military assets, as a form of self-defence. The conflict also raised concerns over global energy supplies amid a sharp drop in shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic route used by around 20 million barrels of oil daily.
