Mongolia to ban social media use in schools from 2026-2027

Ulan Bator (ANTARA) - Mongolia’s Minister of Education and Science, Luvsantseren Enkh-Amgalan, stated on Wednesday (19/8) local time that the country will ban the use of all social media platforms in state schools starting from the 2026-2027 academic year. Enkh-Amgalan said the decision includes prohibiting the management of chat groups or social media pages by school classes involving parents, teachers, and students from the next academic year onwards, in order to ensure online safety for students and reduce screen dependency. Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are among the most widely used social media platforms in Mongolia. It is quite common for teachers to communicate with students and their parents through Facebook chat groups, as well as to post school assignments in those groups. Typically, the academic year for educational institutions at all levels across Mongolia begins on 1 September.
