Ulan Bator (ANTARA) - An amendment to Mongolia’s Road Traffic Safety Law banning children under the age of 18 from riding mopeds, electric scooters, electric bicycles, off-road electric motorcycles, and other similar light electric vehicles came into effect on Wednesday.

Under the revised law, if a minor is found operating a moped, including an electric scooter, electric bicycle, or other vehicles with similar specifications, legal responsibility will be imposed on the child’s parents or legal guardian, as well as the company or individual responsible for providing or renting out the vehicle.

According to the Mongolian Ministry of Roads and Transport, traffic accidents involving electric scooters, electric bicycles, and off-road electric motorcycles have increased four- to five-fold over the past two years, prompting the stricter regulations.

A total of 532 traffic accidents involving electric scooters, mopeds, electric bicycles, and off-road electric motorcycles were recorded across the country in 2024, resulting in three fatalities, the ministry stated. Local authorities noted that 95 per cent of these accidents occurred when riders were not wearing helmets or other protective gear.

According to Mongolia’s National Traumatology and Orthopaedics Centre, 754 injuries related to mopeds, electric scooters, electric bicycles, and off-road electric motorcycles were recorded during the first five months of this year.
