Money Changers in Batam Swarmed by Customers as Foreign Exchange Transactions Surge
Foreign exchange (FX) activity in the city of Batam has experienced a significant increase over the past week. Numerous money changer outlets in the central business and trade districts have been crowded with members of the public looking to exchange foreign currencies for various purposes, ranging from overseas travel and business to investment.
Field observations show that queues of customers have begun to fill service areas since early morning. One location experiencing a drastic surge is 5T Money Changer (PT Lima Triniti Valasindo & PT Lima Triniti Remiten). The majority of customers are conducting transactions involving United States Dollars (USD), Singapore Dollars (SGD), and Malaysian Ringgit (MYR).
Alin, 25, an employee at 5T Money Changer, revealed that the surge in transaction volume has been noticeable since the beginning of the week and reached its peak towards the end of this week. According to her, many residents are taking advantage of exchange rate fluctuations to secure rates considered advantageous.
“In recent days, transactions have increased sharply compared to usual days. Many customers arrive early in the morning to exchange foreign currencies, especially Singapore Dollars and US Dollars,” Alin said during service activities on Sunday (7/6/2026).
The high level of transaction activity is closely linked to Batam’s strategic position, bordering Singapore and Malaysia. In addition to tourism needs during the holiday season, many business actors require foreign exchange to support international trade activities within the Free Trade Zone (FTZ).
Putra, 37, a customer, admitted he had to arrive early before operating hours began to avoid long queues. “I plan to exchange Rupiah for Singapore Dollars for a family trip. It is usually not this crowded, but there were already many people waiting this morning,” he said.
In response to this surge, several money changer operators have begun taking anticipatory measures by increasing the number of staff at service counters and optimising transaction verification processes. This is being done to ensure security and accuracy in counting amidst the heavy flow of customers.
As of Sunday afternoon, the flow of customers at money exchange centres in Batam remained busy. Business actors estimate that demand for foreign exchange will remain high in the coming period, coinciding with the start of the school holiday period and increased international travel mobility.
The public is advised to remain diligent when conducting transactions and to always monitor official exchange rate movements to obtain competitive rates amidst the dynamic foreign exchange market.
