The Jakarta Environmental Agency has revealed a significant reduction in electricity costs following a synchronised blackout across several areas of the capital on Saturday evening (13/6). The initiative managed to slash electricity expenses by approximately Rp 108,693,752, or nearly Rp 108 million.

The skies over Jakarta were noticeably darker on Saturday night as the city observed World Environment Day 2026. The blackout lasted from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm Western Indonesian Time.

“Based on data from the PLN Greater Jakarta Distribution Unit (PLN Disjaya), the action, which took place from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm, succeeded in reducing carbon emissions by 60.14 tonnes of CO2e. It saved electricity consumption by 75.08 MWh and lowered electricity costs by Rp 108,693,752,” said Head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency, Dudi Gardesi, in a statement on Sunday (14/6/2026).

The blackout was implemented at several strategic and iconic points in Jakarta, including the National Monument (Monas), the Arjuna Wiwaha Statue, the Selamat Datang Monument at the Bundaran HI roundabout, the Pemuda Statue, the Jenderal Sudirman Statue, and the Jakarta City Hall complex.

Dudi stated that the action represents the Jakarta Provincial Government’s commitment to promoting a culture of energy conservation. The initiative also aims to encourage the public to participate in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“Switching off the lights for 60 minutes is not merely symbolic. It is a reminder that simple steps taken together can have a real impact on the environment. From small habits, we can create big changes for a healthier and more sustainable Jakarta,” he said.

He explained that the activity was carried out under Governor’s Instruction Number 14 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Light Switch-Offs for Energy Saving and Carbon Emission Reduction, which is conducted periodically in Jakarta.

“The emission reduction achieved shows that behavioural change in energy use can yield measurable results if carried out consistently and involves many parties,” he added.

“This success was born from collaboration. From building managers, business operators, and communities, to residents who participated by turning off lights and unused electronic devices during the action,” he continued.

The Jakarta Provincial Government continues to encourage energy-saving behaviour not to stop as a momentary movement, but to become part of the community’s daily lifestyle. Simple steps such as turning off unused electronic devices, using energy-efficient lamps, and using electricity wisely at home and in the workplace are considered capable of making a significant contribution to reducing carbon emissions.

“When millions of residents consistently take the same small steps, the impact on Jakarta’s environmental quality will be enormous. Because protecting the earth and ensuring cleaner air is not just the government’s task, but a collective movement of the entire community,” he concluded.

Earlier, detikcom’s on-site observation at Bundaran HI on Saturday (13/6) noted that streetlights around the roundabout began to be switched off at around 8.30 pm. The blackout was conducted to commemorate World Environment Day.

Not only streetlights, but the iconic Selamat Datang Monument, which is usually brightly illuminated, became barely visible in the darkness. Several billboards and videotrons surrounding Bundaran HI were also temporarily deactivated. The area, normally colourful with lights from surrounding buildings, appeared much quieter and darker.
