Monas gets a baby deer

JAKARTA: One of eight Indian does gave birth at the National Monument (Monas) park on Saturday, making the total of does and bucks at the park to 19.

Governor Sutiyoso was happy to see the deer on Monday at the 5.2-hectare deer-zone. He said that they have adapted to the new habitat.

Head of the City Park Agency Mauritz Napitupulu said that the monitoring team was yet unable to identify the sex of the fawn.

He said that the fawn would not get special treatment but grass cutting in the deer-zone would be minimized to reduce the possibility of causing stress to the fawn.

The administration released 12 spotted deer (Axis-axis) at the park in June followed by another six later on. The project stirred controversy as many people feared the animals would not survive in the noise and pollution of Jakarta. -- JP
