A cash office of Bank BPD DIY on Jalan Kapten Pierre Tendean, Wirobrajan, Yogyakarta, caught fire on Thursday (12 March) evening. Eyewitnesses reported hearing what appeared to be an explosion from an electrical transformer near the location.

Observations at the scene revealed that the exterior of the Bank BPD DIY cash office was heavily burnt. The signage in front of the building was also consumed by the flames. Electrical supply in the surrounding area was disrupted.

A tent positioned in front of the building caught fire as well. Several motorcycles parked underneath were also severely damaged.

One resident, Dwi, reported that the incident began around 8:30 PM. He heard an explosion followed by a large fire breaking out.

“Around half past eight, there was an explosion sound and then a fairly large fire immediately appeared. It appeared to come from a transformer that had previously shown signs of malfunction. The lights in nearby houses dimmed briefly, and we called PLN (the state electricity company),” Dwi said when interviewed at the scene on Thursday evening (12 March 2026).

He explained that before the fire, lights in several homes had dimmed. In fact, the neighbouring village had experienced a power outage before the incident.

“The problem is that right before the lights dimmed we heard an explosion. When the transformer exploded, the lights went out immediately, but actually the neighbouring village had lost power earlier,” he stated.

Dwi also mentioned that several company motorcycles were parked beneath the transformer. When the fire started, the front of the motorcycles and nearby signage were immediately engulfed in flames.

“Under the transformer there were several motorcycles, around three to four units, and they were company motorcycles. The front of the motorcycles and the boards nearby immediately caught fire,” he said.

Shortly after the incident, fire brigade personnel arrived at the scene and immediately began extinguishing the flames.

“The firefighters arrived and managed to put out the fire about eight minutes later,” he said.

“This kind of problem has happened several times before. There have been other transformer explosions in this area,” he concluded.
