Moments of a Blast That Wrecked a Resident's Home in Sumenep! 2 Injured, Police Find Mercon

Sumenep, East Java – Residents of Pajung Hamlet, Bantelan Village, Batuputih District, Sumenep Regency, East Java, were jolted by a loud explosion on Thursday morning, 5 March 2026. The blast, believed to have originated from a mercon, damaged a resident’s house and left two people injured.

The incident occurred around 07:00 Western Indonesian Time (WIB). The damaged house belongs to Pusadin (45), a local farmer. The explosion severely damaged the bedroom; walls collapsed and the terrace also fell.

Two residents were injured: Ainul Yakin (37) suffered burns on several parts of the body and a head wound; Imroatus Shalihah (30) sustained minor injuries.

Police arrived at the scene and conducted an on-site investigation. Based on initial checks and statements from nearby residents, the explosion is strongly suspected to have originated from a rakitan mercon.

Inafis team of Sumenep Police also secured several pieces of evidence from the scene, including used plastic bottles, rolled pieces of paper suspected to have been used as mercon materials, and rolls of tape or insulating material.

Around 09:40 WIB, Kapolres Sumenep AKBP Anang Hardiyanto visited the site to ensure victim handling and that the investigation proceeded smoothly.

In his statement, he warned the public about the dangers of rakitan explosives used to make mercon and urged people not to manufacture, store, or use such devices, as they can threaten lives.

Police are continuing to delve deeper to determine the exact cause of the explosion and will take legal action in accordance with applicable regulations.

The Kapolres also urged the public to be more vigilant and not to play with or assemble mercon, especially ahead of periods when such explosives are more commonly used.
