Moment US Aircraft Carrier Deployed to Middle East: Preparing for Major War?

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, capable of carrying over 5,000 personnel under the US Central Command (CENTCOM), is intended to replace the USS Lincoln, which rotated back to the US in August 2026.

According to Reuters, the USS George Washington is currently enforcing a US Navy blockade against Iran and providing protection for commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

A report from the US Naval Institute (USNI) indicates that the carrier strike group of the USS Theodore Roosevelt is expected to sail from San Diego on the US West Coast in the coming weeks for a deployment mission lasting over seven months.

The USNI is a private military association that conducts research and coverage regarding national security issues.

Controversy and criticism have surrounded the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been on an exceptionally long deployment since November 2025. The US aircraft carrier reportedly faced logistical issues and concerns regarding the mental well-being of its crew after sailing for hundreds of days without docking or transiting through a port.

The US has had aircraft carriers stationed in the Arabian Sea for strike missions against Iran since the country and its allies, including Israel, engaged in war in late February. Washington has also imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports amidst disputes regarding control over the Strait of Hormuz.

The recent deployment of the USS George Washington from Japan means that there are currently no US aircraft carriers on standby in the Pacific region, an area where the US typically stations vessels to deter China.
