Moment Prabowo Chats and Gives Two Thumbs Up to Thai PM at ASEAN Summit

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - A friendly moment between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul was captured on camera during the retreat session of the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines, on Friday afternoon (8/5/2026).

Observations from the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel show President Prabowo and the Thai PM appearing engrossed in conversation before the summit retreat session began.

The two conversed while standing. Prabowo even held the Thai PM’s hand as they chatted.

Afterwards, Prabowo had a brief talk with Foreign Minister Sugiono, who was accompanying him in the event room.

Shortly thereafter, the event moderator asked the delegates to proceed to the stage for a group photo.

As Prabowo was about to ascend the stage, the Thai PM greeted him again. At that point, Prabowo gave two thumbs up to the Thai PM.

Opening the retreat session, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr highlighted the global situation filled with uncertainties.

Amid the prevailing turbulence, he stated that this moment serves as a reminder that countries in the region remain connected to one another.

“We gather at a time of uncertainty, when conditions outside our region remind us once again how connected we are,” he said.
